Jason L. Baker, 37 - tenant of the victim charged with first degree murder after being arrested in Kentucky
Kimberly D. Caldwell, 37 - girlfriend of Baker also lived in the house charged with obstructing justice
Antioch (Lake County), IL

An Antioch Township couple charged in the stabbing death of their landlord pleaded not guilty Wednesday in Lake County circuit court. Jason Baker, 37, is charged with first-degree murder in the Feb. 4 death of David Queen, 70. Baker had rented a room in Queen's house in the 40200 block of Deep Lake Road.

Baker and his girlfriend, Kimberly Caldwell, 38, also are charged with fleeing to Kentucky after the slaying. Assistant State's Attorney Marykay Foy said Baker intended to kill and rob Queen, who he had known for over a year before moving into the house, but it is unknown if any money was stolen from the victim.

Another tenant of the house called police after discovering Queen's body on the floor, Foy said, and an autopsy determined he had been stabbed several times with a large knife that was found inside the house. Less than 12 hours later, the couple was located in southern Kentucky, where Caldwell had told her employer she was going to move as she quit her job.

Oklahoma County District Attorney David Prater has amended the first-degree murder charge against a “Bicycle Bob” defendant. Two Edmond residents — Connor Adam Mason and Nikolas David Kerr — were being held on first-degree murder charges in the death of Dwite Morgan, 54, a homeless man known around Edmond as “Bicycle Bob.” A third defendant, Heather Irene Holden, also of Edmond, is being held on an accessory after the fact charge.

Wednesday morning, Kerr appeared in court along with his attorney, Don Jackson, and Assistant District Attorney Kevin Etherington. After the murder charge was amended to accessory after the fact, Kerr waved his preliminary hearing and was bound over for pretrial conference on April 14.

Bond was set at $50,000, and Kerr was expected to be released later today, meaning that he will get to spend the night at home with his family for the first time in months, Jackson said. If convicted on the accessory charge, Kerr faces up to 45 years in prison.

Deputy Chad Mechels

Posted by Sheriff in Murder

Chad Mechels, 33 - Turner County, SD, Deputy Sheriff shot to death while conducting a well-being check on Sunday, March 15, 2009; leaves behind a wife and two young children
Ethan Johns, 19 - Surrendered to authorities several hours after shooting Deputy Mechels; his girlfriend's family had called law enforcement fearing he was suicidal
Marion (Turner County), SD

Defense attorneys for Ethan Johns, who faces a possible death sentence for the killing of Turner County Deputy Chad Mechels last March, want prosecutors to prove that Mechels was attempting to arrest the suspect on the night of the murder.

Prosecutors offered two reasons for seeking the death penalty last month: That Mechels was a law enforcement officer and that Johns killed him “for the purpose of avoiding, interfering with or preventing a lawful arrest.”

Johns' attorneys, Jeff Cole and Sid Strange of Sioux Falls, will be in court in Parker Thursday to argue that prosecutors must provide proof of the second claim.

Prior to the February announcement of their intention to seek the death penalty, prosecutors had maintained that Mechels was on the farm for a well-being check.
